The Significance of 108 beads

Each traditional meditation Mala has 108 beads, plus the Guru or Bindu bead which signifies the attainment of the Ultimate reality.

Each Mala is a sacred piece that has the potential to guide the wearer to liberation. 1 + 8 = 9, so the number 9 is also very significant, it is said the nine planets control our entire system, and nature. So wearing a mala helps master and balance these forces which normally cause certain imbalances in our system and psyche.

Wearing a mala denotes the wearer has transcended physical limitations that normally afflict a person. So it is also a blessing to wear a rudraksha mala of 108 beads. The beads are also used for counting in meditation, through which one achieves the ultimate spiritual completion; Self-Realisation.

The 9 planets are: Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, Rahu & Ketu

Wearing a Mala balances the entire system, as it harmonises with all the elements and the entire creation with which the number 108 harmonises. There is great mathematical symbolism within the number, which, in essence, alludes to completion.
