The Rudraksha Guide
Can Women Wear Rudraksha? The Truth About an Ancient Misconception
By Shivjyoti. Initiated Swami, Founder of Shivoham, Melbourne.
This is one of the most common questions I receive. And it is one of the most misunderstood teachings circulating in the spiritual world today.
Can women wear Rudraksha?
The answer, in short, is yes. Absolutely. Without hesitation. Without restriction. And the longer I have walked this path, the more important it has become for me to say this clearly. Because the misinformation around women and Rudraksha has kept too many sincere seekers away from a practice that was always meant to be theirs.
Let me explain everything you need to know, from someone who has been wearing Rudraksha for over two decades, who was initiated as a Swami in 2013, and who has studied with masters in India across more than two dozen pilgrimages.
Where Did the Idea Come From That Women Cannot Wear Rudraksha?
There is no scriptural authority for the belief that women should not wear Rudraksha. None. The Shiva Purana, which is the principal text on Rudraksha, makes no such restriction. It speaks of Rudraksha as the tears of Shiva, fallen to earth as a gift for all sincere souls seeking liberation, peace, and protection. Not just for men. For all.
The misconception arose later, woven into custom rather than scripture, and it has been most commonly attached to two things. The first is the idea that women should not wear Rudraksha during menstruation. The second is a more general cultural hesitation around women wearing the symbols of renunciation and the sannyasin path. Both of these ideas deserve to be examined, because both of them dissolve when you look at them honestly.
Can Women Wear Rudraksha During Menstruation?
Yes. Completely. There is no spiritual reason to remove your Rudraksha during your cycle.
Here is the simplest way to think about it. A Rudraksha is either worn or it is not worn. The energy of the bead is the same in both states. The wearer is the one in motion. If the bead is supportive, sacred, and protective in the days before menstruation, it remains supportive, sacred, and protective during it. The bead does not change. The seed does not become impure because a woman is bleeding.
More than this, the menstrual cycle itself is a profound form of purification. It is the body's own ritual of cleansing, release, and renewal. The idea that a woman in her most natural cycle of purification should remove a sacred object that supports her spiritual practice is a contradiction. The body is doing exactly what it is meant to do. There is nothing to apologise for. There is nothing to hide.
The old prohibitions came from a time when menstruation was considered ritually unclean in some traditions and women were excluded from temples, kitchens, and ceremonies during their cycle. Many of those customs have been challenged, softened, or dropped in recent decades by spiritual teachers around the world. The Rudraksha rule belongs to the same fading category. It is custom, not truth.
My honest advice. Wear your Rudraksha through every day of your cycle. Many women find that the energetic support is particularly welcome during these days, when emotions can rise and the body asks for tenderness. The mala is on your side.
Can I Wear Rudraksha if I Eat Meat or Drink Alcohol?
This is the second question I receive most often, and I want to answer it with the same honesty.
Yes. You can wear Rudraksha even if you eat meat. You can wear Rudraksha even if you drink alcohol. You can wear Rudraksha if you smoke, swear, lose your temper, fall in love with the wrong person, doubt your path, or live a life that looks nothing like the textbook image of a yogi.
Shiva accepts all.
This is one of the most beautiful truths of the Shaivite tradition, and one of the most under-spoken. Shiva is not a god who demands perfection before he meets you. He is the god of the cremation ground, of the outcast, of the wild seeker, of the householder, of the renunciate, of the sinner and the saint without distinction. The Rudraksha is his gift, and his gift is for everyone who reaches for it.
What I have seen in twenty years of practice is this. When a person begins to wear Rudraksha sincerely, with even a small intention to grow, the energy of the bead supports that growth. Habits soften over time. Not by force, not by punishment, but by something subtler. The bead reminds you of who you really are, and slowly the things that no longer serve you fall away on their own. Cravings lessen. Reactions calm. Choices become clearer.
You do not need to be vegetarian to wear Rudraksha. You do not need to give up wine before you order your mala. You do not need to wait until you are good enough. You are already good enough. The work of the bead is to help you remember that, and to support whatever genuine evolution your soul is already moving toward.
If you want to refine your habits, the Rudraksha will support you. If you do not want to, the bead will still bless you. It does not judge. Neither does Shiva.
The Benefits of Rudraksha for Women
Women who wear Rudraksha consistently report a range of benefits that align with what the tradition has always taught. These are some of the most common, in my own experience and in the experience of the women I have worked with.
Calm in the nervous system. The natural electromagnetic properties of Rudraksha are known to soothe the body's stress response. Many women find that within a few weeks of daily wear, their sleep deepens, their anxiety quiets, and they feel more held in their own skin.
Emotional balance through the cycle. Because the bead works with the subtle body, women often report that the rises and falls of the menstrual cycle become smoother. The premenstrual edge softens. The post-menstrual clarity comes faster.
Protection in the energy field. Women, particularly empathic and sensitive women, often absorb energy from their environments without realising it. Rudraksha acts as a quiet shield, returning what is not yours to its source and keeping your own field clear.
Support during major transitions. Pregnancy, motherhood, perimenopause, menopause, divorce, grief, awakening. The bead is a steady companion through the seasons of a woman's life. Many of my clients have come to me at moments of profound transition and asked for a Rudraksha specifically because they needed something to anchor them.
Deepening of spiritual practice. For women who already have a meditation, mantra, or yoga practice, Rudraksha amplifies what is already there. The bead is a tool of remembrance. It reminds you, every time your fingers touch it, what you are actually here for.
Which Rudraksha is Right for a Woman?
All of them. Every Mukhi from 1 to 21 can be worn by a woman, just as it can be worn by a man. The Rudraksha you choose has to do with what your soul is asking for, what your astrological chart suggests, and what is calling you intuitively. Not your gender.
Some general guidance for women who are beginning. The 5 Mukhi Rudraksha is the traditional starting point. It is ruled by Jupiter, governs wisdom and spiritual learning, and is the most balanced and universally beneficial bead for daily wear. A full 108 bead mala made of 5 Mukhi Rudraksha is the classic japa mala for any sincere seeker.
The 6 Mukhi Rudraksha is often suggested for women specifically because it is ruled by Venus and governs love, relationships, and creative expression. It is a beautiful bead for the feminine principle.
The Gauri Shankar Rudraksha, which is a naturally joined pair of beads, is sacred to the union of Shiva and Shakti and is particularly powerful for women navigating partnership, motherhood, or the integration of masculine and feminine within themselves.
For protection, the 9 Mukhi Rudraksha, sacred to Goddess Durga, is a very powerful bead for women.
But none of this is restrictive. Wear what calls you. The bead will tell you it is yours.
A Word to the Women Who Have Been Told They Cannot
If you are reading this because someone told you that as a woman you should not wear Rudraksha, or that you must remove it during your cycle, or that you cannot wear it because you are not pure enough, I want to say this gently and clearly.
They were mistaken.
You are not less because you are a woman. You are not less because you menstruate. You are not less because you eat meat or drink wine or have not yet become the person you imagine you should be. You are exactly the soul that Shiva is reaching toward. The Rudraksha is for you. It has always been for you.
Place it around your neck. Wear it on your wrist. Hold it in your hand during meditation. Trust it to do its quiet work. And let the old voices that told you otherwise fall away with everything else that no longer belongs to your path.
Om Namah Shivaya.
